Grammy's Cup from Edinburgh Just Broke

My Grammy was well known for going full-on archivist with her possessions and family heirlooms. Or not exactly heirlooms. She had boxes and metal safes full of trinkets and jewelry and broken toys all carefully wrapped in tissue and labeled with what it was and where she got it.

For example, this espresso cup and saucer:

Cup and Saucer from Scotland
A cup and saucer grammy got in Scotland
when she was there with, apparently, Ann Baird.

Call me excessively practical or improvident or possibly a bad steward of items that have come to be in my possession, but honestly I'm kind of into actually using pretty things.

Why drink out of a crappy mug from TJ Maxx when another option is a beautiful porcelain espresso cup from Edinburgh lovingly brought home by your grammy? (And Ann Baird apparently)

Could I just state for the record I have no idea who Ann Baird is. Other than someone my grammy was in Scotland with.

Anyway, here's the bad news about actually using your pretty things:

The cup from Edinburgh with a chip and no handle.
Sad face.

The downhill play-by-play began when Tom picked up the cup a month ago and the handle just broke off. He glued it back on but the other day it fell off again and this time the cup dropped on the counter and broke.

I guess it's better to have loved and lost than to have stuffed a cup in the cabinet for decades and never really appreciated it.

But it still will be hard to throw this cup away. It's still sitting on the counter exactly where it was when I took this picture a week ago.
