Touring around Red Hook

We had a big adventure that luckily transpired before the monsoon that has been the last half of September. Although it was drizzling, now that I think about it.

First, we went to this art sale called "See you Next Thursday" on the Lower East Side. Derek and Wanda wanted to go and sure, we were in. The show was basically lots of art in plastic covers strewn onto long rows of folding tables.

After that, the four of us went over to the ferry terminal and boarded the boat to Red Hook. Taking the ferry is a sure-fire approach to turn any excursion into an adventure.

It's so easy to forget that Manhattan is an island.

Because yeah, there's this weird moment that happens more often than I'd ever admit. It's when I'm walking down the street, surrounded by skyscrapers, and suddenly get a whiff of the sea. Or listen to Matt and Helen talk about the sailing lessons they are taking and the jolt of realization that the sailboat dock is right around the corner from where we live.

It starts out feeling like some kind of psychotic break -- but then a corner of my brain pipes up -- we are surrounded on all sides by seawater, dummy. In fact, we now have an actual beach that just opened. (No swimming is permitted in case you were wondering.)

Red Hook Day was a success. Tom had found a few art exhibits in these gigantic warehouses right on the water (which may or may not be currently underwater).

Big warehouse space filled with arts
displayed in the normal way, ie not a rummage sale.
The prices reflected this.

Then we walked by this door,
which I thought was very captivating.

Then we walked by this garden which I wish I could recreate.
It's hard to pull this off and not have it look like a grouping of weeds.

We had dinner at this place: http://grindhausnyc.com/
It is run by a former dominatrix, which I found noteworthy and oddly charming.
