NaBloPoMo Day 4 - The dude in Row 6 at the conference

The conference was at capacity is a key point.

I was at a conference sitting near the back watching a continuous string of dustups in the sixth row.

The auditorium was packed and there were almost no more chairs remaining. In the aforementioned sixth row, an older man, like late 70's probably, had sat himself one-in from the aisle. The seat next to him, right on the aisle, was empty. But he had jammed his rolley-bag (because he took a rolley bag to a conference) in front of the chair, thus blocking the entire row and also making it impossible to sit in the empty seat next to him.

Nonetheless, multiple people attempted to sit in the empty seat I guess not seeing the rolley bag or thinking they could straddle it or something. The guy growled at them like a feral cat. They all backed off with their hands slightly raised.

Fast forward thirty minutes and a woman has a medical emergency almost right next to where I was observing the goings on from near the back of the room. It was kind of shocking honestly but that's not what this blog post is about.

Good news! It was a medical conference and like 30 doctors swoop right in. This woman is getting better care than she'd get at a certified medical facility.

Despite the obvious, ie that there are multiple MDs on the scene basically fighting over who is going to give the orders and who is going to receive the orders, the guy from Row 6 climbs over his rolley bag and marches up to the medical emergency. He announces, "Retired Physician Assistant here!"

Someone says, "We're good! We have 30 doctors and one patient."

The former Physician Assistant just stands there for a couple minutes and then trundles back to his chair, climbing back over his rolley bag.

Sometime later, I notice the guy has moved the rolley bag out from in front of the chair and put it behind a pole in the center aisle. Thus the empty seat next to him is now freed up. It was immediately taken.

Of course I started psychoanalyzing the whole affair. Did this guy, his good samaritan energy awakened due to the medical emergency, did it dawn on him he was being a total asshole taking up two seats when clearly the second seat was in demand?

We shall never know because I had no interest in talking to him.
